1. Uncover Your Why
Being a real estate agent is hard. You get paid differently, you wear multiple hats, you work nights and weekends, and it’s entirely up to you to grow your business.
Suppose you don’t take the time to discover your reason for getting out of bed every morning, calling prospective leads, hosting open houses, staging home listings. In that case, you will quickly become unmotivated and undisciplined.
A common reason agents fail to reach their 2022 real estate goals is that their goals are focused solely on monetary gains.
But as the old saying goes, “money can’t buy happiness.” Happiness comes from doing the things you love, not from the number of transactions you close. Budgeting and prioritizing will enable you to spend money on what is important to you.
Money doesn’t excite you to go to work – passion does. When you can identify what makes you happy and build your business around your why, you increase your business’s chances of success.
7 Questions to Ask Yourself to Uncover Your Why
- When I became an agent, what change did I want to make?
- What excites me most about my career?
- What are my talents, skills, and strengths?
- Where do/can I add the greatest value to my team and/or clients?
- What does success mean to me?
- What are some things I want to accomplish?
- If I could do anything, what would I do?

2. Cultivate a Growth Mindset
To reach your 2022 real estate goals, you must develop a growth mindset.
Having a growth mindset means you believe that your talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others.
Real estate agents who worry less about looking smart and put more energy into learning to become better agents tend to achieve more than their counterparts.
Having a growth mindset is essential because it can help you overcome obstacles in your real estate career as your work to reach your 2022 real estate goals . By changing the way you think, you can change how you learn from your experiences.
3 Ways to Develop a Growth Mindset
Reflect
Take time to jot down the past year’s successes and failures. Also, be sure to take note of your strengths and weaknesses as a real estate agent. Becoming aware of your areas of improvement is essential for cultivating a growth mindset.
Embrace Challenges
Don’t shy away from complex areas of your career, and don’t underestimate your skills or value. Give yourself permission to try new things and make mistakes. Part of developing a growth mindset is changing the negative perception of a challenge.
Practice Perseverance
Everyone in life has setbacks, both big and small. Dealing with and overcoming obstacles is a critical trait for real estate agents. Write down your why and goals and keep them nearby. Then, anytime there’s a bump in the road, take a look at that list to inspire yourself to keep moving forward.
3. Determine Your Areas of Business
With so many ways to generate new business as a real estate agent, it is easy to spread yourself too thin. Many realtors feel the pressure to do it all – sphere of influence prospecting, neighborhood farming, FSBOs targeting, email marketing, door knocking, social media management, and more.
However, when you focus on too many areas at once, you risk burnout and poor performance – both of which will take a massive hit to your bottom line.
To stay focused, motivated, and disciplined it is crucial to pick three to four areas that you will primarily focus on. Take time to consider what areas you would enjoy working on most. The more you enjoy a task, the better you will perform.
Once you have selected your business areas, invest the time and attention necessary to master your chosen lead generation avenues. Fine-tuning your skills will increase not only your results but also your confidence.

4. Develop A SMART Plan
If you want action, you need an action plan. Goal setting is the best way to transform lofty resolutions into bottom-line results. Research shows that when real estate agents set measurable goals, they’re more like to achieve them.
Actionable goal setting involves defining the objectives and identifying the resources you’ll need to invest in attaining them to reach you 2022 real estate goals. Once you know where you want to go, the next step is to figure out how you’ll get there and how much you’re willing to spend on the trip.
One of the best ways to create attainable goals is to use the SMART Goal Setting System to define your goals. When you set a SMART goal, it is easier to plan for the goal and to determine whether or not you have achieved it.
SMART GOAL SETTING
Specific – Specific means that your goal is detailed enough to answer the 5 ws questions: who, what, when, where, and why. Exactly how many referrals, listings, transactions do you want to generate this quarter?
Measurable – Measurable means you can control and track your goal progress using numbers. How will you keep track of your progress? What metric will you benchmark your success against?
Achievable – Attainable means that your goal can realistically be reached successfully. What will you do to achieve this goal, and what challenges may you face?
Relevant – Relevant means that the goal aligns with your greater career goals. Why are you choosing this particular goal?
Time-Bound – Time-bound means that you can track the goal in a set of time frames. The progress of the goal can be seen weekly, monthly or yearly. When will you begin and when is your deadline?
5. Focus on Consistency
It is easy to be excited for the journey ahead at the beginning of a new year. But when you reach bumps in the road you may find your motivation, work ethic, and patience lacking.
That is why you must remain consistent with your efforts. Your success as a real estate agent will depend on how much time you are willing to consistently put into your career to achieve your desired results.
The road to being consistent is not easy. It is paved with distractions, missed opportunities, and hard work. But you must invest in constant efforts towards your goals to make tangible progress.
There are two primary components of consistency
1. Patience: You have to be willing to accept that things may not come quickly and to endure the time necessary to achieve your goals.
2. Commitment: You have to make a promise to yourself that you will continue to move forward no matter what may get in the way.
