Washington calls its entry-level license "Broker," not salesperson — and saves your background check for after you've passed the exam. Here's exactly where to go for each step.
You must pass both the state and national exam portions within 6 months of each other, or you'll have to retake both. From there, you have 1 year from your final passing exam date to apply for your license. One nice detail: your passing score report doubles as an interim license valid for up to 45 days after DOL receives your application, so you're not left in limbo while it processes.
After you pass, not before — Washington explicitly requires the exam first. Schedule your IdentoGO fingerprinting once you've cleared both portions, and keep in mind results are only valid for 6 months, so don't let too much time pass between fingerprinting and finishing your application.
Not formal reciprocity, but a genuinely streamlined path: if you've held an active license in another state within the past 6 months, you can skip Washington's pre-license education and the national exam section entirely — you'll just need to pass the Washington-specific portion, submit fingerprints, and provide license history from your current state.
That's just Washington's terminology — Broker is the entry-level license everyone starts with, working under a supervising Managing Broker. The next tier up, equivalent to a broker elsewhere, is called Managing Broker here.
You'll need to identify the firm and Managing Broker you'll affiliate with as part of your license application — new Brokers in Washington can't practice independently, so this affiliation is built into the application step itself, not something added afterward.
A scaled score of 70 on each of the two exam portions. It's not a raw percentage of correct answers — questions are weighted — so don't try to calculate your exact number of misses from that score.
Most people spend $800–$1,200 total, covering the 90-hour education requirement, roughly $210 in PSI exam fees, and about $233 for the DOL license fee, plus fingerprinting costs.
