Maine Real Estate License FAQ

Maine runs two separate one-year clocks: you have one year after finishing your 55-hour course to pass the state exam, and then one more year after passing the exam to actually submit your license application. Miss either window and you'll need to retake that step.

It's built into the application step rather than something you schedule separately upfront — once you apply, you'll book IdentoGO fingerprinting, and results go straight to MREC as part of reviewing your file. There's no need to pre-order it before you've passed your exam.

Maine can issue an equivalent license to someone who holds a current, active real estate license in another jurisdiction, once they meet Maine's requirements — but it's evaluated case by case rather than through a fixed list of reciprocal states, so check directly with MREC about your specific state.

You can complete your course, pass your exam, and submit your application without one — but your Sales Agent license can't actually be activated until you're affiliated with a licensed real estate agency and its designated broker. No affiliation, no active license, regardless of how far along everything else is.

Beyond your 55-hour pre-license course, plan for roughly $85 for the Pearson VUE exam fee, $100 for an active license application, a $21 background check fee, and about $52 for fingerprinting.

75, on Maine's 0–100 scaled scoring system. That number isn't a straight percentage of questions answered correctly — it's a statistically adjusted score, so don't try to reverse-engineer exactly how many you missed from it.

Not a quick one. Maine requires two years of active experience as a Sales Agent before you're even eligible for the Associate Broker course, and two more years as an Associate Broker before you can pursue a full Broker/Designated Broker license. There's no fast-track option.
